Frequently Asked Questions About Life and Adjusting
to Life in Spain
Why do I need to register (empadronamiento)?
This is your primary document proving that you live at a specific address. Without it, you will not be able to obtain a resident card (TIE), register with a public health clinic, enroll your child in school, or exchange your driver's license.
Can I use my driver's license in Spain?
Licenses issued in non-EU countries are valid for 6 months from the date you obtain residency. After that, they must be exchanged (canjear) for Spanish licenses. We can help you complete this process.
How can I access public healthcare?
Once you have obtained your residence permit and Social Security number (NSS), you can register with your nearest primary care center (CAP—Centro de Atención Primaria). We can assist you with obtaining your NSS and registering with a primary care center.
Is it hard to find a good private school for a child?
Barcelona has a wide selection of international schools (British, American, French), but spots at the best ones are limited, and there are waiting lists. We recommend starting the search and application process 6–9 months before the start of the school year.
What is a TIE, and how does it differ from an NIE?
The NIE is simply a foreigner's tax identification number. The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is a physical resident card that verifies your identity and your legal status in Spain. Obtaining the TIE is a mandatory step after your residence permit has been approved.
Do you help people find housing?
Yes, we work with trusted real estate agents. Our role isn’t just to find an apartment, but also to review the lease agreement for any terms that might be unfavorable to you, as well as to help you set up utilities (electricity, water, internet) in your name.
